HOLISTIC WELLNESS
Living Your Best Life
Holistic wellness is about treating the whole person; there are so many fragmented individuals with physical health problems–that are connected to other aspects of their lives. Three out of four African Americans have high blood pressure by age 55, that’s a startling 75% of black people in the United States.
There are many factors in the development of high blood pressure, but the two most common treatments are medication and diet. But the life of an individual is much more than that, several studies have shown racism contributes to high blood pressure levels in African American men.
Perceived racism contributes to stress and low self-esteem which ultimately negatively affects blood pressure level. The relationship between exposure to discrimination and blood pressure levels among African-American men differ based on socioeconomic status.
Greater social and economic resources increase the ability of African American male to challenge discriminatory factors in their lives, this protective factor allowed professional black males to lower some aspects of their blood pressure naturally.
